Funding coup for restoration effort
19th May 2006
THE Paddle Steamer Ruby restoration effort has received a considerable boost in the form of a $48,500 grant from HeritageNSW.
The Ruby Board of Management successfully applied for a grant that could see the grand old lady of the rivers under her own steam and cruising the Murray and Darling Rivers by this Christmas.
The funding will be used to complete a comprehensive set of plans and documentation needed for survey (the vessel’s roadworthy and registration) and completion of the fire fighting, bilge pumping and electrical systems.
Board of Management chairman, Leon Wagner, said news of the group’s successful funding application had buoyed the spirits of the restoration volunteers immeasurably.
“Now that we have this money, coupled with the considerable support, both financial and in-kind, from Wentworth Shire Council, we can now really get on with finishing the Ruby,” Mr Wagner said.
“This is great news considering we will be celebrating her 100th birthday in July 2007.
“We are now confident of having her on the river under her own steam for that milestone occasion.”
What is needed now, Mr Wagner said, was a concerted push towards the finish line.
“We are looking for people with practical skills to come on board and help us compete the restoration works. Some of the skills we need include plumbing, fitting and turning and those with electrical experience,” Mr Wagner said.
Interested people are asked to contact Mr Wagner on 5025 2585.
